Day 8: Spectacular Split

We began our day with a walking tour, led by Maja, a local guide. Maja led us to various spots around Split but our primary focus was the sprawling Diocletian's Palace, built by Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century AD.

When I hear the word "palace" I think of a self-contained castle, but Diocletian's Palace is more of a sprawling complex; its various structures are integrated into the town of Split itself, which I thought was pretty cool!

After we finished touring Diocletian's Palace, Maja led us through a few more sights, walking along the water for a bit and poking into a few of Split's piazzas. It was a bright, sunny morning, and Split was looking gorgeous!

Afternoon Free Time in Split

Once our walking tour finished, we had the rest of the day free to spend as we wished. Mom and I first headed to Kruščić Bakery for some pastries. We had heard about the bakery via the TV show Somebody Feed Phil--but let the record reflect that Phil is only our second favorite enthusiastic American man with a travel show ;)

We grabbed lunch at Cicibela Food and Wine Bar, a cute restaurant on a quiet back street. I had "drunk risotto," which, to be honest, I ordered because it sounded fun! It was very good.

After lunch, we went back to our hotel to rest. I had ambitious plans for the afternoon but we wound up staying in until dinner--after a week going nonstop, we needed a break!

For dinner, mom and I went to ARTiČOK, which had a lovely outdoor dining area, really good food, and service that's best left unmentioned...

Our dinner is pictured to the right: stuffed mushrooms, pumpkin soup, duck, and white chocolate mousse!

After dinner, we went back to our hotel and packed our bags ... we were going to Bosnia-Herzegovina the next day!
