Day 10: A Morning Walk in Mostar
Today began in Bosnia and ended on a Croatian island. You can't say this tour doesn't have range!
We began with a walk through Mostar, led by the very informative local guide Mili. During our walk, we saw several mosques and other sights of note, as well as learned about some of the impact of the war on Mostar.
Mid-morning, we stopped at Biscevic House, a Turkish house museum. Mili showed us several traditional costumes, then we all enjoyed a beverage break--coffee, tea, or brandy--in the museum's beautiful courtyard. I opted for coffee (though the brandy was tempting...)
After our coffee break, our walk continued. I always love looking out for street art when I travel, and in Mostar, there was a lot of it, much of it related to the war. The mural below, for example, says "Never forgive, never forget Srebrenica," a reference to the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men were killed. A poignant reminder.
We also stopped by Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque. The mosque's interior was lovely and colorful, and outside, there were gorgeous views of the Old Bridge. We took advantage of the backdrop and took a group picture!
After our walking tour finished, we hopped on our bus to make one last stop before returning to Croatia. Our destination was Žitomislići Monastery, a Serbian Orthodox monastery. I usually think all churches look basically the same, but I loved this one: the brightly colored murals adorning every surface of the interior were absolutely gorgeous.
Return to Croatia
Then, it was back to Croatia!
We headed for Ploče, where we grabbed a simple pizza and salad lunch and then boarded the first of two ferries required to reach Korčula, our home for the next two nights. The ferry rides were pleasant and sunshine-filled!
At last we arrived on the lovely island of Korčula. We checked into our hotel and then relaxed until it was time to meet for dinner with the group. We ate at the hotel, and everything was excellent--I particularly loved the main course of fish.
