Day 4: A Morning in Kobarid

We began our day with a trip to Kobarid to tour its museum, which focuses on World War I. Kobarid was the site of the 1917 Battle of Caporetto, the aftermath of which was described in Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. Despite having read that book long ago, my knowledge of WWI’s impact on Slovenia was pretty limited, so it was interesting to learn more about it!

Lunch in Goče

From Kobarid, we headed to the tiny (and very cute!) town of Goče for lunch and a wine tasting at Cejkotova Domačija, a family-run agriturismo. There, we feasted on meats, cheeses, and bread (not to mention a LOT of wine, of course); everything they serve is from their own farm. After lunch, the owner took us for a brief tour of his 700-year-old wine cave.

Onward to Croatia!

After lunch, we departed Slovenia and crossed the border into Croatia. I was excited to get two additional passport stamps: one as we left Slovenia; another as we entered Croatia.

Our destination was Motovun, a hilltop town and our home for the next two nights.

After climbing up the hill to Motovun, we checked into our room and then headed out for dinner at a nearby restaurant.

I had celery soup with black truffles to start, chicken rolled in bacon for my main, and cheesecake to finish. We were accompanied throughout our meal by two VERY curious local cats :)
